Eugene Releases Pedestrian and Bicycle Strategic Plan In January, more than 140 participants braved the elements to
attend Eugene’s second Walking and Biking Summit, with a majority of them
biking or walking to the event. The summit was the culmination of a 16-month
long strategic planning effort. While the plan looks broadly at local
pedestrian and walking issues, several action items are directly tied to
increasing the number of employees who walk, bike, or take transit to
work. Reducing single-occupancy vehicle work trips is one of the most
effective and achievable methods to improve employee health, reduce
congestion, and reduce climate impacts. To participate in one or more of the actions geared towards
increasing walking, biking and transit trips to work, check out the new plan
at http://www.eugene-or.gov/walkbike.
City staff will rely on a new Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee
(BPAC) to assist in the prioritization and implementation of the plan’s
strategies and actions. For more information on the strategic plan or
BPAC, contact David Roth at 682-5727 or david.f.roth@ci.eugene.or.us. Commuter Solutions would like to recognize SOLARC Architecture
and Engineering, Inc., for their Earth Day activities and for their
dedication to sustainability throughout the year. Of SOLARC’s 24 member
staff, 15 commute to work by biking, walking, riding the bus, or carpooling
at least 3 days every week. The SOLARC office is earth-friendly, with
composting bin, recycling containers, energy efficient lighting, and low-flow
toilets. Outside are a worm composter, easily accessible bike racks, and
solar panels on the roof. To celebrate Earth Day, SOLARC is encouraging all staff members to consider making “Earth Day Resolutions” that will help improve the overall health of our planet. Please click here for a complete list of SOLARC’s Earth Day Resolutions. Commuting and the Emergency Ride Home Program January’s cold weather brought more than just snow…along with
the snow came a flurry of questions about the Emergency Ride Home program as
it relates to bicycle commuting. We’d like to address a few of those
questions here. The Emergency Ride Home program (ERH) provides a free taxi
ride home to registered commuters (including bike commuters) in the event of
a personal or family emergency. The only requirement is that the commuter did
not drive alone on the day of the emergency and that the commuter and his/her
employer are registered in our free ERH program. Do snow/ice or bicycle breakdowns qualify as an
emergency? Unfortunately, cases of
extreme weather and bicycle maintenance issues do not meet the criteria of an
emergency under the ERH program guidelines. However, an injury sustained
while commuting by bicycle would be covered, as well as a sudden illness
experienced by commuter or an illness/injury of a family member. Taxi providers on our call list have the
ability to transport both you and your bicycle, but please let them know when
you call that you will have a bike to transport. They may need to send a
specific taxi to accommodate your bicycle and you may experience a small
delay. If your business would like to enroll in this free program
please call Tracy Smith at 682-6183. New Faces,
