Welcome to Smart Ways to School!

The Smart Ways to School Program was designed to improve school safety while reducing energy consumption and traffic congestion by promoting alternative ways to school for students and parents.

Participating schools include elementary, middle, and high schools serving nearly 11,000 students in the Bethel, Eugene, and Springfield school districts in western Oregon.

Parents
How did you get to school when you were a kid? Did you walk? Take the bus? Ride your bicycle?

When today's parents were children, most of them traveled to school by walking, bicycling or riding the school bus. These days, many children are being driven to school. Recent nationwide research has found that more than 50 percent of children travel to school by car.

This can create traffic congestion and safety concerns at schools. It also contributes to air pollution and a less active lifestyle for children. There are various reasons for this change, including limited school bus service or safety concerns for unaccompanied or unsupervised children. But there are also solutions for these situations. Check our travel options section to see which solution fits for your family.
