Walk and Bike Groups

A walking or bicycling “bus” is a group of students who travel together along a designated route to school, pausing at pre-arranged “stops” to allow other students to join the group. Parent volunteers may accompany the group if appropriate. Traveling together is a great way for students to walk or bike safely while being more physically active and enjoying the fun of a group.

We can help you find others to join in a group with your student. We also can help you select a good route to school and create a map for participants.

Q and A regarding the Student Transit Pass Program

Student Transit Pass Program

Hurray, it’s back!!
The Student Transit Pass Program (STPP) that enables students in grades 6 through 12 to ride LTD free will return this fall beginning September 1, thanks to a change in guidance provided by the Oregon Department of Energy (ODOE).

Earlier this year, LTD believed the program would not continue beyond the 2006-07 school year because ODOE had requested that local funds be obtained to supplement the cost of the program, and LTD was unable to secure sufficient funding from area schools. Given this situation, ODOE allowed program staff to re-apply for funding through the Business Energy Tax Credit Program, and the application was approved.

“We are very pleased the Oregon Department of Energy is allowing the program to continue and we believe the success of the program over the past three years was pivotal in their decision,” said Lisa VanWinkle, STPP coordinator. “Many parents, students, school staff, and others have told us how the program enables students to travel to and from school without driving or being driven by car. This reduces traffic and fuel consumption which helps the environment while it helps the community.”

The Student Transit Pass Program will offer interested students an STPP program sticker that will be placed on their 2007-08 school identification cards by school staff. card and sticker will serve as the students’ free pass to board LTD for unlimited riding to school, work, and other destinations. Flyers describing the program will be provided to area schools to distribute to families in back-to-school packets.

The Student Transit Pass Program is managed by Commuter Solutions, a service of LTD, as part of the Smart Ways to School program that encourages K-12 student travel via walking, bicycling, carpooling, and riding school or public buses to and/or from school.

The STPP began as a pilot project in spring, 2005, serving 5,000 students at selected local high schools in Eugene and Springfield. For the 2005-06 school year, the program expanded to serve 20,000 middle and high school students in Eugene and Springfield. Another 6,000 middle and high school students attending schools in rural communities within the LTD service area were added during the 2006-07 school year. Approximately 26,000 students will be eligible to participate when the program begins again in September 2007.
