Construction Update - August 23 2010

READY TO ROLL!
After 16 months of construction, LTD will begin the testing and training phase for the Gateway EmX Extension this week!

From now through December, motorists can expect to see EmX vehicles traveling on the Gateway EmX route as LTD tests the vehicle detection and traffic signal systems and trains EmX operators. The extended EmX service will be open to the public on Sunday, January 9, 2011.

TIPS FOR TRAVELING AROUND EmX
Motorists will travel in their normal traffic lanes along much of the EmX route, and EmX vehicles will travel in EmX-only lanes. There are a few exceptions where motorists will cross EmX lanes to reach their destinations. Below are tips to help motorists safely travel around EmX vehicles. For more details, visit the Gateway EmX Route Design information page at ltd.org, or click here.

Pioneer Parkway East and Pioneer Parkway West, South of F Street: In this section, motorists will travel in two through-lanes adjacent to a left-hand EmX lane. Motorists who wish to turn left onto one of the A through F cross streets should use the EmX lane. First, they should yield to an EmX vehicle if present, then move into the EmX lane within the block that precedes their turn, and then make their left turn.

International Way: Motorists on International Way will travel in the right-hand lanes and EmX will travel in the two center lanes. To turn left along International Way, motorists should yield to EmX vehicles if present, then move into the nearest EmX lane, and then make their left turn.

NEW SIGNALS FOR PEDESTRIANS AND BICYCLISTS
Enhancements for bicyclists and pedestrians on the Gateway EmX corridor will help them as they travel along the route and cross busy streets.

Pedestrian Crossings on Gateway Street and Harlow Road: Two new pedestrian crossings are being installed to help people cross busy roadways. One crossing is on Gateway Street near the U.S. Post Office, and another crossing is on Harlow Road near Pheasant Blvd. These signalized crossings will be push-button activated by pedestrians. The signals will flash yellow and then turn red to stop traffic while pedestrians cross the street.

Rosa Parks Path: South of Centennial Blvd., the southbound EmX lane crosses the Rosa Parks Path that is used by bicyclists and pedestrians. A "walk, don't walk" signal will alert bicyclists and pedestrians of an approaching EmX vehicle.

Early Construction Activities Along Pioneer Parkway

During February and March 2009, LTD completed  early construction activities including tree removal, and installation of erosion control and stormwater protection within the work zone. All of the removed wood has been utilized. Material chipped on site was donated to Willamalane Park and Recreation District for use in Springfield parks. Other material was donated to local nonprofit groups for firewood to low-income families.

Wildish is managing the construction of the Gateway EmX Extension.
