On April 17, LTD joins communities around the world in celebrating the first-ever World Public Transport Day . This is a moment to recognize a critical piece of our community that can fade into the background and yet, makes so much possible.

Why Public Transit Matters

Here in Lane County, nearly 47% of households struggle to afford basic needs like housing, food, childcare, healthcare, and transportation. For these families, reliable transit isn’t a convenience — it’s essential. Access to LTD’s bus and paratransit systems can make all the difference in getting to work, keeping health appointments, accessing education, and connecting to affordable housing.

Connecting Our Neighbors

Whether it’s a UO or LCC student, an older adult visiting a doctor in Springfield, or a care worker commuting to Cottage Grove, public transportation enables connections. It’s the backbone of workforce mobility, giving local employers access to a broader labor pool.

On this World Public Transport Day, LTD celebrates the independence and possibilities those trips create. Behind every ride are stories of connection and choice. At LTD, we’re proud to play a part in keeping Lane County accessible.

Try World-Class Transit, Here in Lane County

Since the launch of the first EmX line in 2007, more than 50 transit agencies and other organizations have come to our region to tour LTD’s EmX line, one of the first Bus Rapid Transit systems in the United States. This includes visitors from throughout the United States and as far away as Japan, Israel, Sweden, Saudi Arabia, Australia and New Zealand. Bus Rapid Transit lines are now in operation all over the world. LTD is proud to have its EmX service be a model for transit innovation in other communities.
