Preparing for Your First Trip
A seamless journey starts before you leave the front door. Plan ahead and know what to expect before you get to the bus stop.
- Know before you go. Review LTD’s Rules for Riding and check out our website to get to know LTD.
- Plan your trip. Use LTD’s trip planner, talk to Customer Service, or use your preferred map app to get step-by-step directions. Consider travel time, transfers, walking distances, how you’ll get to the bus stop, and when you’ll make your return trip.
- Decide how you’ll pay fare. You can download the Umo App and create an account, purchase a tap card, pay cash on the bus, or get a pass from participating schools, universities, and employers. Have your fare ready before you get to the bus stop for easy boarding.
- Get to the bus stop early. However you choose to connect to LTD – walking, biking, rolling, or using a Park & Ride – we recommend getting to the bus stop at least 5 minutes before the scheduled departure time. While you’re waiting, check the bus stop sign to make sure you’re at the right stop and traveling in the right direction.
- Stay informed. Check Service Alerts for detours and delays, and use the real-time bus tracker or call Customer Service for updated information on when your bus should arrive.
- Be safe, be seen. Wait on the sidewalk or shoulder where the bus operator can see you. When it’s dark or foggy, use a flashlight or cellphone to help the bus operator see you. Stay back from the curb and wait until the bus comes to a complete stop before boarding.
- Check the destination sign. When the bus approaches, check the sign above the front window to check that you’re boarding the correct route. Several routes may serve one stop, so if it’s not the bus you want to board, just wave the bus by and wait for the correct bus.
- Board and pay fare. When the bus approaches, have your Umo App QR code, tap card, or exact change ready to pay fare as you board. The fare reader is located inside the bus near the bus operator. For assistance boarding, you can ask the bus operator to use the ramp. Quickly find a seat or handrail. The seats at the front of the bus are reserved for older adults and people with disabilities. When boarding with a mobility device, the bus operator will help you get secured in a wheelchair securement area.
- Pull the signal cord before your stop. Be aware of your surroundings and listen for stop announcements. Pull the signal cord above the windows when the bus is about a block away from your destination to let the bus operator know to stop.
- Gather your belongings and exit the bus. Exit through the rear doors of the bus so riders can easily board and pay fare at the front doors. If you boarded with a bike or mobility device, exit through the front doors. Please do not cross the street in front of the bus. Wait for the bus to pull away before checking traffic and crossing the street at a safe place.
