Dump The Pump Day

June 15, 2016

With rising fuel costs, congested roads and difficulty parking in urban areas, Dump The Pump Day is all about finding alternatives to getting in the car and try to avoid an over-reliance on oil and petrol for the day. Consider alternate methods of transport such as taking the bus, riding your bike, or even carpooling which takes at least one car off the road for the day. The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) is sponsoring the National Dump the Pump Day on Thursday, June 16, 2016.  This day is dedicated to raising awareness that public transit is the quickest way to beat high gas prices.

Here are a few facts provided by APTA:

  1. By using public transportation to commute to work, a person can save between $300 and $3,000 in fuel costs per year.
  2. By getting rid of a car and using transit to commute to work, a person would save between $3,300 and $11,100 annually.
  3. Transit use saves more than 855 million gallons of gasoline every year.
  4. If Americans used public transportation for roughly 10 percent of daily travel needs, the United States would reduce its dependence on imported oil from the Persian Gulf by more than 40 percent.

Join other commuters by leaving your car at home this Thursday and Dump the Pump!
