Vanpool

Vanpooling saves you money, reduces wear and tear on your personal vehicle, eliminates the stress of daily drive-alone travel, and reduces traffic congestion and air pollution.

What is a Vanpool?

A vanpool is a group of 5 to 15 people who regularly travel to work together (at least 20 miles or more roundtrip) in a comfortable van. Typically, riders pay a monthly fare, while drivers may ride at a discounted rate in exchange for driving and maintaining the van.

How Much does it Cost?

A lot less than what you would pay to drive alone! Each passenger pays a monthly fare to ride in the van. Fares are based on the number of average monthly miles and the cost of the vanpool lease and fuel expenses. Monthly cost per rider is generally between $100 and $160 per month depending on the number of riders in the vanpool.

Some employers offer subsidies to employees who rideshare! The IRS tax code (section 132F) allows the first $255 of qualified vanpool expenses to be paid pre-tax. Whether your employer provides a subsidy or a transportation reimbursement account, it all adds up to a nice savings on your commute. Check with your employer or Benefits Administrator to see about subsidies or a transportation reimbursement account.

How do I get started?

To join an existing vanpool visit the Valley Vanpool website for a list of current vanpools.  Contact the driver directly to make arrangements for joining the vanpool.

For more information on forming a new vanpool, see the Vanpool Tip Sheet or contact us at Vanpool@ltd.org or 541-682-6183.

Valley VanPool

Valley VanPool is a collaboration of Cascades West Rideshare, Cherriots Rideshare, and Point2point at Lane Transit District. This collaboration streamlines service, promotion, and recruitment for commuter vanpools in the Willamette Valley.

Valley Vanpool currently has over 50 Vanpools traveling in the Willamette Valley. These vans reduce Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) by nearly 500,000 miles each month. The Valley VanPool logo is highly visible on vanpools traveling throughout the Willamette Valley.

Valley Vanpool has made great progress in making vanpooling more popular and easy to do. Valley VanPool looks forward to creating and supporting many more vanpools in the future that will give Willamette Valley commuters more choices in how they get to work.

Valley VanPool was named the 2013 Transportation Options Program of the Year!
